On Thursday, October 22,
2009 Dr. G.E. Ghali was honored
as the recipient of the
2009 Samaritan of the Year
at
East Ridge Country Club, Shreveport
________________
Dr. Ghali has lived and practiced in Shreveport for the past 13
years.
He is married to wife, Hope and has four children. Dr. Ghali's
contribution and service locally and around the world
exemplifies our mission and vision of what the life of a true
Samaritan is and the Center is pleased to pay tribute to him.
Dr. Ghali travels extensively to
destinations such as Turkey, Thailand, and India to lecture and
conduct operating workshops for the resident oral surgeons.
There are also cases scheduled which he volunteers his services
to demonstrate and teach innovative techniques to their surgical
staff.
He volunteered his services to
operate on a young lady from the Dominican Republic who had
fibrous dysplasia (an abnormal bone growth) on the left side of
her mouth, so large that it would eventually cut off her air
passage and prevent her from breathing. Dr. Ghali assembled a
team that removed the tumor and reconstructed her face. At 20
years old, she was able to eat foods that she never could
before, and also began to regain her self confidence. Not only
did she look beautiful, but she felt beautiful.
In August 2005, Hurricane Katrina
left thousands of people homeless. Dr. Ghali and his wife
provided a family of seven a house to stay in, paid the rent for
six months, and provided many of the family necessities.
Dr. Ghali has arguably the widest
scope of any oral and maxillofacial surgery practice in the
country, spanning from cleft lip and palate repair to cosmetic
surgery to head and neck cancer. His professional interest lies
especially with treatment of pediatric craniofacial deformities
including craniosynostosis, cleft lip and palate, and
dentofacial deformities. However, his surgical interests also
include dentoalveolar surgery, dental implants, cosmetic
surgery, head and neck oncology, bone grafting and preprosthetic
surgery, temporomandibular disorders and trauma.
Dr. Ghali is a professor and
chairman at Louisiana State University and is very active in
resident and student education. He also has appointments to
countless hospital committees helping to keep LSU-HSCS at the
forefront of medical care in Louisiana. Dr. Ghali’s association
with national and international organizations has helped shape
the profession of oral and maxillofacial surgery as well as
provides world-wide recognition for the LSUHSC Shreveport Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery residency program.
Dr. Ghali has had numerous research interests including clinical
and basic science research. He has published in numerous
peer-reviewed journals, written many book chapters and has
edited textbooks that are vital to the knowledge base of many in
the specialty.
The Samaritan of the Year award is
presented annually to an individual who has made significant
contributions to human health and growth, demonstrated religious
sensibility in their work, and personally exemplifies the ideals
of the Samaritan ministry. The proceeds from the banquet will
enable the Center to continue to help those who come for
counseling, regardless of their ability to pay standard fees.
The Samaritan Counseling Center's
Board of Directors was especially proud
to honor Dr. G.E. Ghali for his
dedication to humanity and his years
of Samaritan-like service.
